BAFE-Registered vs BAFE-Aligned: What a Fire Risk Assessment Actually Needs
"BAFE-registered" vs "BAFE-aligned" — what's the difference?
When you compare local fire risk assessment providers, you'll see two phrases that sound similar but mean different things:
- BAFE-registered / BAFE-certified — the company holds BAFE Third-Party
- BAFE-aligned — the assessor follows BAFE's published methodology and competence
Certification (often SP205 for fire risk assessment). This is a formal accreditation of the *company's* processes, audited by BAFE.

Both can produce a compliant fire risk assessment. The law does not require a BAFE registration — it requires a "suitable and sufficient" assessment by a competent person.
What the law actually says (RRO 2005)
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the dutyholder must:
- Arrange a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment (Article 9).
- Ensure it is carried out by a competent person (Article 11/18).
- Keep it reviewed and up to date.
"Competent" is judged on knowledge, training, and experience — not on a specific certificate. BAFE is one *route* to demonstrating competence, not the only one. A NEBOSH-qualified assessor working to PAS 79 (the recognised methodology for FRAs) meets the competence bar regardless of company BAFE status.
Why some firms lead with BAFE
BAFE registration is a genuine quality signal — it means the company's QA, training and reporting have been independently audited. In our priority territories (Doncaster, Epworth, Brighouse, Selby, Goole) several established providers are BAFE-registered and rightly promote it. It's a credible differentiator.
But it's not the whole story. A BAFE badge doesn't tell you:
- whether the report is PAS 79-format and enforceable-authority-ready;
- whether the assessor who visits is NEBOSH-qualified;
- whether you can get a fixed, transparent price up front.
How to choose the right assessor
Ask every provider the same five questions:
1. What qualification does the assessor hold (NEBOSH Fire, etc.)? 2. Is the report PAS 79-format? 3. Is the price fixed and published, or "call for quote"? 4. Is the company BAFE-registered, or BAFE-aligned? (Either can be fine — just know which.) 5. How fast can the assessment and report turn around?
A competent, transparent, PAS 79 report from a NEBOSH-qualified assessor satisfies the RRO regardless of BAFE status. BAFE is a bonus signal of process maturity, not a legal gate.
