Myth: “We have a fire extinguisher, so we’re compliant.” Wrong. An extinguisher is a tool, not a plan. Under the RRO 2005, you must conduct a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment (Art. 9) and maintain a full emergency plan (Art. 15) — not just hang a red cylinder. PAS 79 stresses that extinguishers are only one control measure; you also need detection, escape routes, and staff training. The Fire Safety (England) Regs 2022 add duties for flat blocks, like monthly checks on lifts and doors. So: an extinguisher helps, but it won’t save you from a fine — or a fire.
